Murder in the Golden Age of Locked Rooms - The House of Snow and the Six Tricks

Image
Murder in the Golden Age of Locked Rooms by Danro Kamosaki is a novel that knows what it is, and what it is is all about locked rooms. Not just any kind of locked rooms, but locked locked rooms. No psychological tricks involving victims desperately locking the door themselves before dying of their injuries or culprits pretending that the murder already took place then sneakily committing the crime right under the witness's noses. No, this is a novel about tricks - tricks involving meters of string, construction equipment, and gallon jugs of white phosphorus and liquid nitrogen. If you like the sorts of cases the Ace Attorney fangames community came up with in 2008 (or as recently as March 2024, as it turns out), this is one for you. Epilogue: Three Years and One Month After Japan's First Locked Room Murder

It was half a day after the case was solved that rescue came to the House of Snow, and we handed Fenrir, the culprit, over to the police. Actually, we'd wanted to hand over Riria, too, but she'd suddenly disappeared from the room where she'd been confined. It's not that she disappeared like smoke or anything. A ceiling panel in the room had been torn off, so she'd probably escaped through there. As far as locked room tricks go, it was rather crude. Riria's escape from the hotel was captured on the security camera on the gate. But where she went from there, we don't know. The bridge was still down, so she probably went into the forest like Yashiro. Whether she was alive or dead was still unknown. The police and media were still searching for the national actress-slash-murderer. As for Shitsuri Mitsumura, she isn't being hounded by the media after having her locked room trick exposed. In fact, she was living a peaceful life. Mitsumura had said that t...

Interlude: An Indulgence Called A Locked Room

Fenrir's mother had hanged herself when she was ten years old, having been deceived by a fraud. No matter how much she cried, her mother never woke up, and her father would only say in quiet voice “Let us pray.” “If we do that, your mother's soul will be purified and bring happiness to the world. As the High Priest says, suicide is also a type of murder. Although its energy is small compared to a true murder, if you pray with all your soul, your mother's death will surely become something meaningful.” She wondered how long it had been since her father and mother had joined this strange religion. Before she knew it, Fenrir was also there, and every week, on her days off, she attended strange meetings. Fenrir was a girl who didn't believe in God or even souls, but without even realizing it, she'd risen through the ranks, and soon she was being hailed as a leader of the strange religion. It was likely simply because she was brilliant, and more than that, she was bea...

Chapter 6: Collapse of the Closed Room

Yozuki was drinking tea in the dining hall, waiting for a call from Kuzushiro. Kuzushiro had declared that the mystery had been solved, gathered everyone in the dining hall (even though they were already there), and disappeared somewhere. It seemed like he was preparing something. Yozuki, who had gotten bored, joined Mitsumura, who was still eating at a nearby table. She suddenly asked her something, just wanting to make small talk. “Do you think Kasumi's actually managed to solve the locked room?” Mitsumura shrugged and said “Well, what do you think?” Kuzushiro returned to the dining hall at that moment. It felt like he'd kept them waiting for a while, but in actuality, he'd only been gone for less than 30 minutes. “Okay everyone, please come with me.” Kuzushiro said that as he led Yozuki and the others out of the dining hall. It was an extremely formal affair. Yozuki thought it didn't suit him. Well, any intelligent behavior didn't suit Kuzushiro. H...
